[Solved] Can't start xterm as normal user

When I start xterm, I get :-

jason@myhost ~ $ xterm
open ttydev: Permission denied

urxvt, gives
jason@myhost ~ $ urxvt
urxvt: could not obtain control of tty.

Gnome-Terminal and Terminator are both fine. Not sure when this happened as I've been using Terminator for some time now.

I added myself to tty group but it didn't work. Any ideas?

It seems a udev issue. Which version of udev do you have?

Re: [Solved] Can't start xterm as normal user

I fixed my issue, I should have replied to myself sooner. I'd messed up my /etc/inittab at some point without realising. I had

c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin jason tty linux

instead of

c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin jason tty1 linux
