Arch 64Bit inside VirtualBox [solved]

Hello guys,

I run a 64Bit version of Linux Mint 10 on my laptop with VirtualBox 4.0.4 installed. My Core 2 Duo T5870 supports the VT-x technology. However I can't install a 64Bit version of Arch. During the boot process I always get the following message:

This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU.
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

Who can help me out?

Regards

HI jolinfire,

I didn't understand you properly. As stated above, I already have a 64Bit version of VirtualBox installed.

Re: Arch 64Bit inside VirtualBox [solved]

You created a 64-bit virtual machine, not just 32-bit right?

do you have the VT-x extensions enabled in your BIOS? I think OEMs usually disable them by default

How would I create a 64-bit machine? I just created a new one based on Linux and Arch, assigned a hard disk and that's it. There was no possibility to set or define the architecture.

You may give me a hint. wink

Can I check if VT-x is enabled during runtime? I think it should be enabled, but I'm not completely sure. And unfortunately I didn't find any setting in the BIOS of my Lenovo SL500.

Re: Arch 64Bit inside VirtualBox [solved]

When you create a Virtual Machine, you have the option to create either a 32 bit one or a 64 bit one.

If I want to create a VM for a 64 bits archlinux, I click on version (in the first step of creation wizard), and select :

"Arch Linux (64 bit)".

You can find for linux :

- Arch Linux / Arch Linux 64
- Debian / Debian 64
- Fedora / Fedora 64
- Mandriva / Mandriva 64
- Ubuntu / Ubuntu 64

And a lot of others.

Just check this version wink

Re: Arch 64Bit inside VirtualBox [solved]

Thanks for that detailed answer but it still doesn't help me out because I don't have that settings available.

Here is a screenshot of my wizard: http://picfront.org/d/87aO

Which version are you using?

Here on my system it's 4.0.4 r70112 that should be the most recent one.

Does your procerssor support x64 virtualization?

Maybe is the most stuppid question on the thread, but hey, I have a x64 laptop that does not suport x64 virtualization and didn't realize until i tried to use an x64 VM

PS: you might want to re-check that, i think it does not http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37034

Re: Arch 64Bit inside VirtualBox [solved]

Oh dear you are right. I sould have considered the intel page at first instead of looking at some inofficial sources...

Thanks, then the problem should be "solved".

But just for my own interest: If I have a processor that support virtualisation and if it's enabled, then the entries vor 64-bit machines would be available instantly?

Regards
