nethack and the meta key

I've started to get into nethack, and its crazy addicting. But I can't seem to get the meta key working in the game. It just ignores it.

From my xmodmap, it looks like meta should be the Alt_L key:

mod1        Alt_L (0x40),  Meta_L (0xcd)

from xev:

keycode 64 (keysym 0xffe9, Alt_L)

I've also added the following to my .Xdefaults:

urxvt*meta8: true

Now I've run out of ideas. Has anyone here experienced this problem before, or does anyone have any suggestions?
