creating a "read-only" arch linux system

Is it possible to have the root filesystem mounted as an aufs filesystem, where the underlying root filesystem is protected from any changes and thus if any changes are made they are discarded on shutdown/reboot? If so could someone point me in the right direction please? Many thanks in advance

No (big) problem. You just need a script in the initramfs to handle the mounting. Have a look at how it is done in larch or archiso (or use one of these directly).

Perhaps you would like the system provided by CTKArchLive which is a "Live" flash/CD complete read-only system, persistent and modifiable.
