RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

I am dropping support for perl-xyne-arch and all packages that depend on it:

  • bauerbill

  • powerpill

  • reflector

  • pkgd

  • rebase

  • pacpan

  • makerepo

  • arch32-light-utils

The code in perl-xyne-arch is ugly* and with the update to pacman 3.5 it would require many changes that I just don't have the time or the will to make right now.

I have been working on a replacement for powerpill/bauerbill but that is progressing very slowly because I have to implement several complex libraries and I have nearly no free time right now, so it will be many months before I have anything to show for that, if I'm lucky. I mention this only to explain my reluctance to work on the perl-xyne-arch code... I see no reason to spend time that I don't have fixing something that I intend to completely replace with something far superior**.

The mantra of many open-source devs is "I do this on my own free time so I don't owe you shit", but I'm not one of those. I feel bad about dropping support like this. Those of you who use my apps know that I try to respond quickly to bug reports and feature requests. I pride myself on the normally short intervals between issues and fixes, so this has not been an easy decision for me. I apologize if anyone feels let down by this and I intend to make it up to you in the hopefully not so distant future.

* at least the fact that I look at the code and think "ugh" is a good sign that I have evolved as a coder
** much cleaner code, not written in Perl, and with proper ALPM bindings wink

You are one of the, if not the most prolific member on these forums. I'm sure people will appreciate your concern and look forward to whatever you're coming up with next -- I know that I will.

Thanks for those awesome projects!

No worries Xyne. I for one am very pleased that powerpill and bauerbill existed in the first place, it enhanced my system.

Best of luck smile

Re: RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

I am not a programmer, just a user. I have a suggestion - can you release the source code of bauerbill and related projects in version control form so that those user who know perl can start hacking. I know you don't list any VCS for you project in your website but internally you must have the source under some VCS. Source tarballs aren;t of much help in understanding the changes that has happened in the source. I know this because I am trying to understand programming and one of the ways I follow is correlating the commit log with thee commit diffs in the VCS to understand what code does what etc. . Anyway thanks for the wonderful program.

Dang, now I have to choose between Clyde and Yaourt...

When you say that your new project has proper ALPM bindings, does that mean it isn't a pacman wrapper?

No more reflector??? Devastated... But many thanks, it was brilliant while it lasted.

EDIT:

@ pogeymanz
What about pacmatic or packer?

Though I used bauerbill only briefly, I gotta say that it was one of the finest contributions I've seen in my short time here.  Best of luck in whatever your present endeavor is.  I'm gonna miss reflector, too...  Don't stray too far from the forums though--advice is always a good contribution to any community. smile

I have to say, bauerbill has been my go to for .. a long time. Long enough I haven't typed "pacman" in a while.

Thank you for all the work Xyne. Good luck on the new project.

You don't have to apologize Xyne; we all appreciate the work you've done on these apps.

I do wonder about an alternative to reflector though.

Hey, your project, your choice. Thanks for all the work you put into powerpill though, it was awesome while it lasted... Even if the code was ugly. tongue

Re: RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

Thank you, Xyne, for reflector and powerpill.  I have found them both so useful that I have them cron'd up on all my systems.  smile

I am really excited about perl-xyne-arch's successor.  Is there something I can watch to get news about its development/release?

Thanks alot for opening the curtons for your feature development!

Sounds really great with a bauerbill kinda C app(?) with native libalpm usage!
