Intel Pro/100 cardbus ethernet recognized, but no dhcp

This is not strictly Arch related, but I don't think that should matter much...

I've been trying to set up a Thinkpad 600E as a server. I stuck in a 16-bit Intel Pro/100 cardbus card, attached a dongle to it, and attached an ethernet cable to the dongle. At my last job I saw Intel NICs work fine on lots of machines, so I figured this one would work.

NetBSD 5.1 recognized it as xi0, but couldn't get a DHCP lease on it.

FreeBSD 8.2 didn't recognize it at all.

Debian 6.0 and Ubuntu Server 10.10 had the same problem as NetBSD, recognizing the card but not getting a DHCP lease. On a somewhat related note, it looks like neither the Debian nor Ubuntu install environments include ifconfig (!!!).

Arch Linux was my last choice. The Archboot CD hung up on decompressing the ramdisk, not sure why.

At this point I suspect the dongle may be bad, but I'm open to suggestions... What do you guys think is going on?

For booting Arch you will need to update bios in ThinkPad 600E.

After that, you will be able to boot from cd without any problem, but problem with network is still persistent. There seems to be some issue between PCMCIA interface and sound on ThinkPad 600E, but I still havent found a way to fix it.

And network finaly works.

I have used wifi connection over usb to install new kernel, and with current kernel 3.2.13-1 network over PCMCIA lan adapter is working just fine!
