BINGO!  So here's the scoop:

-Rebooted the liveCD.  Did my partitioning.
-Ran pacman -Syyu and updated pacman.
-Ran the newly available pacman-db-upgrade.
-Started the installer.

However, RANDOM TWIST OF FATE, it didn't work at first.  Turns out ALL THREE of the fastest mirrors for me were down.  I chose the one suggested by JokerBoy and I was good to go.

Marking this solved.

And I'm not talking just the fastest...  I mean the fastest, most reliable mirrors I've found since I started using Arch...  rit.edu, gtlib.gatech.edu, and ece.vt.edu.
