OpenGL trouble with nvidia-270.30-1

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing some trouble after upgrading to nvidia-270.30-1. When I'm using my usual three screen/two card xinerama setup, starting the "Second Life" viewer will crash the X server (1.9.4.901-1) with a segfault in libnvidia-glcore.so. When using only one monitor, SL starts but everything that is not part of the UI will stay pitch black. However, glxgears and "Amnesia - The Dark Descent" work just fine, accelerated and everything.

So is anyone else experiencing trouble with this nvidia driver and OpenGL?

P.S.: Downgrading to nvidia-260.19.44-1 helps.

Re: OpenGL trouble with nvidia-270.30-1

I've noticed performance regressions with 270.30 and nvidia-smi is broken.  See the nvidia forums for more.  It is beta...

nvidia-smi is not broken for me, its just that the format of the output is completely different from the previous versions.

Re: OpenGL trouble with nvidia-270.30-1

It seems related to what I've encountered today whilst starting a game in wine after a system upgrade, including nvidia.

$ wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Rockstar\ Games/Max\ Payne\ 2/MaxPayne2.exe
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f428,0x00000000), stub!
err:winediag:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo Direct rendering is disabled, most likely your OpenGL drivers haven't been installed correctly
....

It happens to all games I tried, resulting in a crash before they can actually start.

Re: OpenGL trouble with nvidia-270.30-1

I could wrong here... I'm new.

I come to update my system and noticed "270.30" in the list... I was like "when did nvidia release this?". Later I found out it's a beta driver... I normally only see stable ( as in not alpha and/or beta ) software in these repo's...

I'm wondering... why is this beta driver in there???

Re: OpenGL trouble with nvidia-270.30-1

I'm wondering myself... something to do with the "preliminary support for xorg 1.10" I've read about somewhere else or with the upcoming 2.6.38 kernel? This version of the nvidia driver is not even in the beta driver list on the official nvidia site yet.

However, the current xorg server in the repos is as well an unsupported pre-release version (as it's the case from time to time in the Arch repos). It tells the user that in the first lines of the xorg log file.

Shall we just close this as another premature update pushed in the "stable" Arch repos and live with the downgrade for the time being?

Re: OpenGL trouble with nvidia-270.30-1

@Firestone be sure that lib32-nvidia-utils has the same version as nvidia-utils. that package was moved later than nvidia and you might not have it.

@sinatosk only nvidia-270.30 has support for xorg-server 1.10 which would be moved shortly...(intel now is blocking the move of kernel 2.6.38)

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: OpenGL trouble with nvidia-270.30-1

Ohhh, that's a good idea! ... The according lib32 package wasn't available when I made the upgrade earlier today. Second Life however is a 32-bit application. I'll try this right now.

Update: Hmm, I really thought this would fix it... it partly did, actually. When using only a single screen, SL runs fine now. But with xinerama and multiple cards, SL crashes (not the whole x server however).

That was indeed the case. Thank you.
