Manual upgrade from util-linux-ng to util-linux breaks system [solved]

I just got an Acer Aspire One netbook. When I install the latest Arch on it neither the eth0 or wlan0 devices are operational. I've tried some other distros (Archone, Ubuntu netbook) on which these devices work, leading me to believe the problem is in the *.33 kernel, and that it can be solved by upgrading to a newer kernel.

To do this I need to upgrade some other packages (mkinitcpio) and replace until-linux-ng by util-linux. Whenever I try this (by downloading the packages and upgrading via "pacman -U" after using "pacman -Rd" to remove util-linux-ng), my system breaks. The mount/umount commands are no longer found, and on reboot the system stalls at init 3 (I think), rendering it unusable.

How can I get around this? Any help would be appreciated.

Some searching turned up two threads with a similar problem, solved by upgrading the kernel. One included a link to a site with .iso images with a newer kernel than the one on the Arch site (http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/). I'm downloading one now to see what it gives.

[edit] It worked. The latest image was from today, which was a little too fresh (the installation stalled because it couldn't find the core packages on the usb), but an image from a month ago worked just fine. This concludes seven straight hours of trouble.
