I keep getting this message lately that tells me I can't connect to my freenode login.
Notice -- You need to identify via SASL to use this server
How do I deal with this (using Pidgin.. I know, I know... but I like it)? Haven't seen any posts here about this, which is interesting in itself... and I can't ask on IRC BECAUSE of this... (just tried creating a temp login just to connect to the IRC channel and ask there, and I can't send a message to the room because I'm not registered with the temp name... serious catch22 here!)

Are you trying to connect with TOR?

no... just connecting with Pidgin. I have not purposely done anything TOR related...

Freenode requires the users of some isp's to use sasl. You can use the webchat to go to #freenode and ask the staffers about it there.
Edit: I do asume that you have tried with another client too.
