I don't think the nvidia driver uses Mesa, does it?  I thought it used their own proprietary built-in rendering library.

I can easily crash my desktop by resizing a gnome-terminal (under openbox). The screen stutters and artifacts as I do it, and usually freezes quickly. At least I can shell in and shutdown cleanly.

From the looks of it, it is an nvidia problem, and they recognize it.

So hopefully they'll release a fix after the nearly 2 months they've known about it. I've managed to tiptoe around the problem for at least a month or two by now, occasionally locking my system hard... That they would let a showstopper of a bug like this go unchecked (ESPECIALLY for so long) makes me pretty angry.

Now I have to figure out how hard it is to downgrade xorg to 1.9 because that seems to be the best solution right now...

Hi, I'd like to report that I was experiencing a similar issue, my entire system would hard lock as soon as I resized urxvt.  No compositing is enabled, and I am using the nvidia driver from 'pacman -S nvidia'.

However I found the exact source of the bug for me.  If i set URxvt*depth = 32, then I get the crash.  If I omit this line, I can resize the terminal just fine.  I was trying to do true transparency with openbox+urxvt, and then came to that.  I hope this helps

It also concerns me that this post from nvidia http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ?p=2441669 says that they fixed a bug with konsole resizing in KDE but it clearly effects other configurations too.
Happens to me with openbox+urxvt without compositing although I haven't tested the beta yet. Maybe it hasn't been fixed at all.

So it seems the issue is fixed (with 275.09.04 beta) for some but not all.   Lucky me, it works for me.

• x86_64

• X.Org X Server 1.10.2

• Nvidia 275.09.04

• GeForce GTS 250

Try and see, I guess.

Edit: I take it back, it seems everyone on FS#23381 have recanted their reports of continued problems.  Lucky everyone?

I can confirm it is fixed for me with 275.09.04. But I'm still reverting back to Xorg 1.9 and stable Nvidia drivers just for the sake of stability, and the fact that I need matching lib32-nvidia-utils. And a quick note for anyone trying to update from the standard drivers, I was having the hardest time getting yaourt to resolve dependencies, so what ended up working was replacing nvidia with libgl, only use lib32-libgl if you are getting problems from lib32-nvidia-utils:

pacman -S libgl 
pacman -S lib32-libgl

then use yaourt, or whatever AUR tool you prefer:

yaourt -S nvidia-beta

I can't say for sure, but looking at dates around ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/ the current trend seems to be one to two driver releases a month.  There were 8 releases in the 256.x.x series, another 8 for 260.x.x, and so far 7 releases of 270.x.x.  So one might guess that the 270 series is wrapping up.

I'd hazard to use the, often more ambiguous than one would like, "soon" word in my superficial guesses.

I also confirm the freeze is fixed using:

- nvidia-beta 275.09.04-1
- kernel26 2.6.39.1-1
- xorg-server 1.10.2-1

I hope it will works for everyone :-)

Everyone who downgraded Xorg.... It is time to go back to 1.10! Nvidia 275 is now in extra and the bug is fixed!!!!!!

Running KDE 4.7 beta [kde-unstable]

Konsole resizing works now at least.

Konsole resizing works now at least.

KDE bug 275878

The attached image shows artefacts worse than mine.

Seems that there is a new raster graphics system that fixes the problem.

kwin --replace --graphicssystem=raster

Fixes the panel but krunner is glitched differently.

EDIT: The performance is so much better with the raster mode. I can actually resize windows without it performing like a slide show.
