major problem with pam

Hi everyone,

I think I did something very stupid. In a desperate attempt to disable pam I wiped out all the config files in /etc/pam.d except for /etc/pam.d/other. Now, as described in the online pam manual, I can't log in into my system.

So I booted from the arch 0.7 install cd and tried to reinstall pam. But the pam-0.78-1 package the cd contains does not contain the other files that previously existed in the /etc/pam.d directory: it only contains /etc/pam.d other. [I first thought I must be mistaken, but I just checked http://www.archlinux.org/packages.php?op=files&id=4066 and it is indeed so.]

Now I need to get my computer in a state where I can once again log into it.

How can I restore my pam setup to its original state?

Thank you in advance for any help,

Mack Stevenson

Re: major problem with pam

Actually, I just managed to solve this! I booted my system again from the rescue disk and manually edited /etc/pam.d/other.

Best,

Re: major problem with pam

You can also pass on "S" or "init=/bin/bash" to the kernel cmd line (at least in Grub) to get into your system without a livecd. The S is for single user mode and best if you can get that far.
