Unable to initialize Clutter

I installed gnome3 from the test repository，but...
the gnome-shell couldn't work,and when I input "gnome-shell --replace" or "mutter --replace", belows exist:

failed to create drawable

(mutter:3009): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context
window manager error：Unable to initialize Clutter.

Dose anyone come up with this problem?

Hello. I'm having a similar problem.

This is what I get when I try "gnome-shell --replace":

[tester@skyship ~]$ gnome-shell --replace
failed to create drawable

(gnome-shell:4307): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context
Window manager error: Unable to initialize Clutter.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

I have the same trouble but can't understand where it comes from.
I downloaded and installed some wi-fi manager packages and boom : no more gnome-shell…

I"m having the same problem. Using ATI graphics card with the open source drivers if that matters.

I also having the same problems using the VMware Drivers (I'm using Arch inside VMware Fusion on a MBP 15" which has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M)

Aha, I solved the problem for me! I deleted "nomodeset" from the kernel boot line in /boot/grub/menu.lst. I had previously added that in order to prevent the boot screen from resizing... Without that feature, the boot screen resizes, but that is a small bug I can live with in order to finally test gnome-shell! woo!

I use "grub 1.99~rc2", and there is no "nomodeset" in my "grub.cfg" file.The result is same,but the reason may be not.

Same problem for me with VMPlayer (3.1.4). Try the open-vm-tools but nothing is working right with it, install the vmware-tools from VMWare, everything works fine except that I have the fallback mode. Is there a way to test the gnome-shell inside a VM ?

@hzyg Were you using the opensource driver before?

@PierreR Good question... perhaps if you enable 2d/3d acceleration (virtualbox) then it'll work?...

The catalyst-11.04 has some bugs. And I reinstalled the arch and gnome3 2 days ago,luckly and strangely,it be all fine now.I'm using the opensource driver (xf86-video-ati).Good lucks!

Yeah, I found the catalyst driver to be quite buggy. The open source version works much better for me too. I think for Linux, nVidia is the best. It seems to run just perfect, whereas with my ATI machine things had to be tweaked and set up and the catalyst drivers were just hard to deal with.

Maybe the first time around you had some conflicting settings in your xorg.conf or something. Glad it works though!

I am using grub 1.99~rc2 as well and I edited and remove "nomodeset" from the file

/boot/grub/grub.cfg

Try this and see if it works for you.
