Is the packager supposed to hack 32bit software's PKGBUILD to support x86_64 as explained here or is that left up to the end user? For example, look at this package (it's PKGBUILD); it uses if/else to determine if the platform is 64bit and downloads gcc-multilib and lib32-glibc if needed. Is that good practice or not?

I don't know if it's good practice, but it looks like most PKGBUILDS dealing with lib32 packages.
