synaptics (touchpad) and hibernate/shutdown/restart/etc..

Finally got time this week to start configuring my set up, so I wanted to start fresh. Reinstalled arch and started off with openbox instead of using a desktop manager. Everything was working the first few days, but now I ran into a problem.

For some reason my mousepad stopped working. It used to work, but now it doesn't. I checked xorg log, and there is no error of any kind, nor is there any log of "synaptic" or "mousepad".

Not only that, but I don't see it in input/devices either.

The other problem is, coming from debian, I like the whole sleep, shutdown, reboot, logout, etc.. screen. Also the computer would go into hibernate when I were to close it. This isn't the case here. The only thing I found that would be close to what I need is the following

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hibernate

And I checked out both methods, and they aren't really what I was looking for.  So I was wondering if there a way to do it like debian or ubuntu does it. A button or command which would display the following type of screen:

logout0.png

Or go into sleep mode when ever I closed my screen.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you

Re: synaptics (touchpad) and hibernate/shutdown/restart/etc..

Re the touchpad - is it possible it's been switched off? I'm only asking because it happened to me (kids got at the laptop, pressed the touchpad on/off toggle) and I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it.... until I noticed that the accompanying light was out smile

Can't help you with the fancy sleep/hibernate/etc gui, but mine suspends to RAM when I close the lid - easy to setup using ACPI and pm-utils, details in the wiki.

Re: synaptics (touchpad) and hibernate/shutdown/restart/etc..

There is a touchpad switch on laptops? Well if there is, i don't think mine has it. Not that i know of that is.

also did you use the Uswsusp method or the tuxonice one?

Fixed the touchpad issue, but still need some sort of solution for the shutdown/hibernate/etc.

I use uswsusp, but native kernel suspend works too. tuxonice is good, as long as you're OK with maintaining your own kernel.

Re: synaptics (touchpad) and hibernate/shutdown/restart/etc..

One thing, if you're interested in a tuxonice kernel, ngoonee has a package in the AUR here.
Are you using plain Obenbox or is it combined with, say, LXDE? LXDE has a window like the one you mentioned, but with the options stacked instead of side-by-side. If not, you can control the power management stuff from the right-click menu with, say, gdm-control or pm-utils. Just add entries and you're set to go!

How did you solve the touchpad issue? This has crept up on me recently and it's pretty frustrating. This looks particularly fun:

Re: synaptics (touchpad) and hibernate/shutdown/restart/etc..

I didn't really fix it in a way. It happened because I had my usb mouse plugged in. So the usb mouse was made as the default controller, rather then my touchpad. So I just unplugged it, rebooted, and it worked.

Also @admiralspark I went with the uswsusp method, but now I'm stuck. It says in order to trigger the hibernate when closing lid, you have to edit /etc/acpi/events/lid. But the file doesn't exist. the events/lid folder doesnt exist at all.

Re: synaptics (touchpad) and hibernate/shutdown/restart/etc..

I do it in /etc/acpi/handler.sh, works fine.

There are plenty of examples in the wiki.
