You are not logged in.
When i start KDM (i'm using inittab method) the login screen loads up fine (a username field and a password field) but once I log in the only thing that loads up is a single xterm windows at the bottom right. The background wallpaper is the same as the KDM login screen.
Why isn't my desktop loading?

Was this after some update?
Anything in ~/.xsession-errors?
Are you sure you have selected the KDE Plasma session in KDM?

Actually, no, I just installed KDE for the first time after being a gnome user. I set KDM to start using the inittab method, and that's all. I installed "kde-meta". KDE starts, but i think it's barebones because all i get are two text fields for username and password (i was expecting something a little more like GDM where you click on a user name?). Once I log in, I can launch plasma-desktop from the xterm at the bottom right.
.xsession-errors only shows "/home/wlfluvr/.bash_profile: line 1: /home/wlfluvr/.bashrc: No such file or directory" but that's because i deleted .bashrc since I'm using system wide settings in /etc
How do I select KDE Plasma session in KDM? Do I do that in inittab?

LOL! I had to choose a session. I didn't expect this at first because coming from Gnome you don't have to do any such thing in GDM.
