Scheduling not working correctly

Ever since I installed the latest kernel 2.6.38.x, my system gets totally crippled when a high CPU process like an extraction of a big rar file gets started. The system loses all responsiveness: google doesn't respond anymore and even urxvt has trouble refreshing.

What could cause this regression and how can I fix it?

Having the same problem. When I move a lot of files via USB to my android phone, FF is almost unusable.

Re: Scheduling not working correctly

You're running these I/O-intensive commands with ionice -c3, right?

Firefox uses sqlite, which loves to "sync" (i.e. force writes to be done *right now*), which is why one strategy is to thwart that by running it in RAM.

As a die-hard BFS zealot, I'd guess it's the crappy "wonder patch" being not-so-wonderful, but I could be wrong.

I am not, but I'll check it out! I can't remember the performance being so bad before 2.6.38 though.
