Steam version of Torchlight

Can anyone get this working?

I've had it working before, over a year ago, but I can't get it going today.

I launch withe SAFEMODE=1 and it looks like it's about to launch then I get an "An error occured and needs to close" message

My system is fully up-to-date as April 21, 2011.
