Hi all. I wanted to post here before filing a bug report to make sure I didn't do anything wrong.
Anyway, my issue is that when trying to open the "My Account" dialog from the user menu or system settings dialog I get the following error:
Failed to contact the accounts service
Please make sure that the AccountService is installed and enabled.
At first I thought it may be because I hadn't logged into any accounts on Empathy yet. So, I loaded up my GMail and AIM accounts, but that didn't fix it. I then started "People Nearby" thinking that the open desktop had something to do with this. That also did not work.
I have scoured Google and while a few people have reported this, I have seen no attempts to figure it out. Any thoughts on why this may be occuring?
Thanks

Looking at my Empathy accounts list again, I see that People Nearby is always trying to connect. Is this normal? I know it shouldn't be trying to find a central service somewhere. Could this be the cause?

do you have telepathy-salut installed?
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Yeah. Looking at other people's issues with empathy I think it may be a firewall issue. I opened UDP 5353 and TCP 5298, but that didn't solve the issue.

Ah. Simple solution that I can't believe I overlooked. I had to start the Avahi-Daemon service.
So, now People Nearby works, but I still have the same "Enable Account Service" error.

Do you have the accountsservice package installed? It's a dependency for gdm, but if you're not using gdm you need to install accountsservice separately.
It might be worth it to make the accountsservice package a dependency for gnome-shell since the settings dialog is a core feature... maybe I'll file a bug report.
