I'm interested in ametour music creation on linux. I sometimes record some stuff with guitar using jack server, ardour and tuxguitar with fluidsynth for drums. Can you recommend me any other good quality software connected with music creation (virtual pluigns, instruments and other..). I know that there are quite a lot of audio applications, but i need to know which are most usable and noteworthy.

i recommend checking out this site:
on there you can find links to live cds that have loads of linux audio software on them.

LMMS is a good FL Studio clone. I find it fairly intuitive and feature-rich, but I haven't done much with it so I only have a relatively superficial impression.

Thank you very much for the site adress (http://www.linux-sound.org/).
Is it possible to record a really good quality music with opensource/freeware programs (of course using good hardware). Are they very limited in comparsion with expensive software?
BTW. Maybe someone can help. If I have keyboards (synthesizer, i don't know how to call it in english.. ) and connect it's midi output to midi (joystick) input in computer, would I be able to record things that i play on keyboards with midi samples from my computer (i am using onboard sound card so far, if it matters)?

Sure it is possible. You should use a nice audio card and everyting else is just your skill and imagination. All apps record similarly, I guess. It's up to you to mix everything in. Using Cubase ($$$) over REAPER (it's not free but it's free) makes no advantage for you if you don't know what you're doing.

You should ask sound people for that...I know that the usual complain is a latency which can be fixed by some RT patches or CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT???

As it happens i have no problem with setting jack to low latency - works good for me with 3ms output letency. I read somewhere that linux kernel since 2.6.30 version have realtime pathes applied by default, but i don't sure.

Yeah, I don't need any realtime magic for my work, either. Although that might become fishy if I ever used hundreds of tracks...

If you are capable of reading music notation, Rosegarden can be worth your while
