Trying to compile 2.6.38 + grsecurity

I've tried this about 10 times now, the manual way copying files to /boot and the pacman way both from the wiki.

If I do it the manual way it won't boot saying it can't find root drive bringing me to a rescue prompt, I put the ramdisk image in /boot and adjusted grub menu.lst for the grsec kernel etc, did the instructions word for word.

The pacman (makepkg) way won't install at all it says error just after something about lib firmware files.

If I make menuconfig, make make modules etc then do make install, it says cannot find lilo (although I'm using grub) something to do with a script that's supposed to auto set up for lilo.

Sorry I can't post outputs until I try and fail again. I'm using 2.6.38.4 from kernel.org and the testing grsecurity patch. Is there no foolproof way of doing this? The "make install" method seems to get me the furthest it didn't give me any errors (along the way) and I'm assuming "cannot find lilo" means it's at the end
