Thx....but it was already unchecked...(I'm running gnome shell with virtualbox btw, so it might be related to this issue).

Actually, only root can connect to a graphical session successfully....so this must be a permission issue...

To make sure it's about permissions you can create a new user and try that. This way you can make sure it's related to a permission issue or the old settings in your user profile.
