nm-applet runs but doesn't show any icons

After going through hell and back while trying to get network-manager-applet working on my kde4.6 desktop I finally realized it won't work for now due to the upcoming change to networkmanager 0.9. I need wired, wireless, 3G and openvpn connections which I couldn't get to run with the plasma applet.
So I thought I might try the gnome nm-applet. And this works - well, almost...

When nm-applet starts the kde4 systray shows me an empty space where the status icon of nm-applet should be. Clicking on this space brings up the left- and right-click menus for nm-applet. It is running correctly, I can handle my connections. But none of the icons is showing up. I experimented with gnome themes, icon sets aso but to no avail. Starting nm-applet from a command prompt gives only the following output (which seems to be quite redundant)

** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area

It is quite annoying not to see if my connection is actually up or down, especially for wireless or 3G connections.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Re: nm-applet runs but doesn't show any icons

Mumble...

So nobody has seen this before? It's even getting funnier. Today I started my laptop and all of a sudden the icons showed up! But with the next reboot they had disappeared again. I have not changed anything and so far I only can tell that it is completely unpredictable to tell if there are nm-applet icons shown in the notification area or not... sad

Re: nm-applet runs but doesn't show any icons

I've the same problem. Sometimes I can't see the icon but there is its space.
When I click onto it nm-applets menu appears - but very huge - here is a screenshot: 4f6ce726751e.jpg

Maybe it helps someone to figure out what the problem is
