GNOME 3 vs old applets (dockbarx & xfce4-xfapplet-plugin)

I got to troubles with the recent update to GNOME 3.

Since I use the desktop computer both locally and through x2go (basically NX technology) and would like to have a similar user experience (re. layout and behaviour of the desktop & windows). Up until now, I used gnome-panel + dockbarx (w/ metacity).

GNOME 3 does not work through remote desktop and the fallbackfall looks quite different and does not really use gnome-panel 2.x with support for applets anyway.

I tried to switch to xfce4-panel + xfapplet + dockbarx, but the xfapplet kept crashing (and has been dropped from packages now).

Does anyone has an idea if the compatibility issues might be resolved or if I shall rather completely forget about keeping my current applets and find some other non-accelerated solution (xfce + native applets)? That would look to me like a step back...
