Problem with sound output from applications

I've just installed Arch on a new computer (been using the OS for about 6 months) and I've got a problem with sound devices that I've not come across before. I'm using SPDIF output to run the sound to my speakers, and everything works fine as long as only one application is playing any sound. However, if I'm playing a track on Rhythmbox and I get a sound alert from an IM program, or if I inadvertently open a YouTube video while Rhythmbox is playing, then all audio from Rhythmbox stops and the new application takes over. The only way to have Rhythmbox begin playing again is to shut the application down and reopen it.

aplay -L gives:

Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

    HDA ATI SB, VT2020 Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=SB,DEV=0

I've never had this problem before, and I try to keep my installation quite simple so that I don't get lost, but I'm struggling with this one. Any ideas?

Re: Problem with sound output from applications

Alsa is kind of difficult to configure for audio from multiple programs. Do you have pulseaudio?

Not as far as I know, I'll give it a go now.

Ok, I have pulseaudio, but I'm not sure if it's configured to do anything as of yet.

Try reading the wiki article on pulseaudio. That should have you going.
