Hello, I'm using KDE here and installed phonon-gstreamer for backend. Why do gstreamer-plugins have a bunch of Gnome libs dependencies? I have to install gtk3 and gconf only to maintain gstreamer on the system. Phonon-vlc has poor performance on my machine and phonon-xine is dropped. Is there a chance to make a package without the gnome libs into official repositories? I found gstreamer0.10-good-plugins-slim (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36636), but it would be great have this improvement "more official". It's part of Arch way: install only what is necessary... "in short: an elegant, minimalist approach".

Its because freedesktop is essentialy a gnome sockpuppet. IMO libsoup-gnome could be made optional (if thats still the problem). I had requested this but was rejected: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22050
There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Use phonon-mplayer. It works perfectly here (both with mplayer and mplayer2). And deps are at minimum.

Oh, it's bad. It's not needed split the package, just make a new package that provides gstreamer0.10-good-plugins for KDE users. phonon-mplayer is good but still on AUR and it's "unofficial" anyways. I'm adopting the package on AUR, I tested here and works flawless.

The Arch devs will not split packages like this unless it is done upstream. If you really, really think this is a problem, you can try submitting a [bug report], but it is very likely to get rejected.

Haha, so true. This always bugged me as well. Most of the "dependencies" for gstreamer should really be optional since only one or two of the MODULAR gstreamer plugins will actually use them. For example, I never use the gstgconfelements so I have to install the good-plugins with "-Sd" if I want to continue to not have gconf installed. There also used to be something called gsthalemenents that tried to install hal.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.
