X won't turn off or let me shut down when monitor is attached.

I have an external monitor attached to my laptop. Everything works fine until I try to shut down X.
If I restart X, try to use a different TTY, or try to restart/poweroff my laptop, my LCD goes blank, and then my computer hangs. I have to force-power off.

I don't see any error messages (or any messages at all for that matter), and I don't have that problem if my external LCD is not attached.

I'm running Arch on a MacBook Pro - Unibody.

I've glanced through my error logs, but I'm not even sure which log I should be checking!  Is there a way to log any "shutdown error messages" that I may be getting but can't see?
