No sound - WARNING: oss_set_volume()

Hi there!

With help from some of you, I can play audio CDs with XMMS.

A problem remains:  No sound come out of my laptop speakers or my headphones.

When I exit XMMS and get back to console, I find this message on my screen:

** WARNING **: oss_set_volume(): Failed to open mixer device (/dev/mixer) : No such file or directoty.

And I know in XMMS, my device volume control is set to OSS Mixer, and my Output plugin is set to OSS Driver 1.2.10.

Can you figure out what is happening with my sound problem?

Thanx

ummmmmm...You can try adding your user to the audio group.  That might help.  Also make sure your sound card module is in the MODULES section of /etc/rc.conf.  also, snd-pcm-oss is in MODULES section.  reboot and see how it goes.

My sound card module (8139too) was there already. I added snd-oss-pcm to MODULES array of rc.conf, rebooted, and tried again with xmms: Still not a bit of a sound comin'out...  At least I don't get the WARNING message anymore smile

In XMMS, my Audio device is set to Default, and my Mixer device too. But what are the defaults? What my Audio device should be (e.g., /dev/?)?

Re: No sound - WARNING: oss_set_volume()

It's been a long day and I'm beat, so if this don't make any sense because I missed something, I appologize.  I'll read closer tomorrow.  But...If you're using Alsa, default volume for alsa is 0.....muted.
You can run alsamixer and unmute and set the volume to your desired level.
Be sure and unmute both Master and PCM.  And raise the volume on both.

Re: No sound - WARNING: oss_set_volume()

OK. I tried with ALSA but I didn't work and I got a bunch of error messages:

WARNING: alsa_get_mixer(): Attaching to mixer hw:0 failed: No such device

ALSA lib confmisc.c: 550:(snd_determine_driver) could not open control for card 0
ALSA lib conf.c:3463: (_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned an error: No such device
...
...
...
ALSA  lib pcm.c:2068: (snd_pc,_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM Default

WARNING: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (default): No such device

So I just don't know what to do and what that mean :?
