[SOLVED]is there away to login into shell instead of Gnome

I have lost the ability to login at GDM to get to Gnome.   This happened just after I added a user.  It just hangs at the login screen thinking.  I feel that I could fix this if I could get to a command prompt.  Is there away to bypass the GUI?

Thanks

Remove gdm from you daemons and/or set /etc/initab to level 3 instead of 5.

edit: or how about ctrl+alt+one of your fkeys like f3. I'm goin to bed now.

If you press

ctrl+alf+f1

it should take you to a console. You could also go f2 f3 etc..
