First off I have an HD 5870 ATI video card, and was able to play 1080p videos in windows.
Unfortunately when I'm using MPlayer it is saying my computer is too slow, so I added some thing in the ~/.mplayer/config
ao=alsa
framedrop = yes
autosync = 30
cache = 8192
If I put into the terminal "mplayer -autosync 30"
I get
MPlayer SVN-r33159-4.5.2 (C) 2000-2011 MPlayer Team
162 audio & 359 video codecs
Usage: mplayer [options] [url|path/]filename
And then a list of options.
Does this mean the command went through successfully?
I tried using the + and - keys in MPlayer but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
If anyone could help me I'd be extremely grateful. Argh!

Have you tried other multimedia players, like vlc?
If you have 'autosync = 30' in your config you don't need to type it into the terminal.

Or smplayer.
Also try mplayer2 instead of mplayer.

mplayer is the best choice for playback.
Post your hardware configuration as long as the driver you installed, there's a bunch of options you can enable to speed-up decoding.

Try vaapi if you are using the catalyst drivers.

karol: Thanks for the tip, and yes I've tried vlc. For some reason it still lags at the beginning but the audio/video are kept in sync, after 15 minutes the whole thing runs smoothly.
RazrFalcon: Maybe I will if I get too frustrated with mplayer, hahaha.
kokokok: Um I have the Asus G73jh, HD 5870 ATI, Intel core i7, Eax advance HD 4.0, and using the xf86-video-ati driver.
Mr.Elington: I'm trying the vaapi thing, but how exactly do I get it to work properly? I downloaded the mplayer-vaapi, and the vdpau-video, and pacman cannot find xvba-video. When I ran the command mplayer -vo vaapi:xv -va vaapi "insert movie here", I have audio playing but no video. What am I missing?
Thanks for all the support guys!
EDIT: I'm using mplayer2, and now everything works fine No more headache!

Great :-)
Just remember that mplayer2 doesn't have mencoder http://www.mplayer2.org/comparison.html (scroll to 'Dropped features').
