When for some reason I have the same album in different formats (flac, mp3) in my mpd library, when I look at the album in ncmpcpp it get 1 album, with each song listed twice

It makes it a pain to add the album to the playlist
I don't want to delete anything. Is there a setting somewhere in either app's config that can do anything about this? Otherwise I think I have to break my big music dir into a dir for each format and then... ah what a hassle

Since mpd is purely tag based: no
you can either retag your albums and make tiny variations (like different upper/lower case rules for album name) or resort in different directories.

Hence the importance of arrange your music library in directories.
I have "FLAC" and "NON FLAC", then I just go to ncmpcpp, press "3", navigate through the dirs, press "space" and done.
