mplayer with caca video output "blinks"

When I attempt to watch a video in mplayer with caca, the output (in xterm) seems to "blink" or "tear".
Here is the output of running it:

I am running the current Nvidia driver on a GTX 580 and  I am running Arch Linux - x86_64.
