This may be related with the following problems:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=120078

I have an HP Pavilion Dv6 series.
I'm using Gnome-shell + Gdm.
I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to solve this other than downgrading or disabling librecord.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Random Crashes on Xorg

Same problem here with a HP 8440p.

I am using kernel-ck:

> uname -a
Linux nevermind 2.6.38-ck #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri May 27 16:39:58 EDT 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU M 620 @ 2.67GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

And Intel driver (i915):

> lsmod | grep intel_agp
intel_agp 10576 1 i915
intel_gtt 13911 3 i915,intel_agp

The problem occurs with gnome-shell, logging in gdm.

I have also tried with newer intel driver (xf86-video-intel-git from AUR), but did not sort out the X server crash. I could only get my system to be stable by disabling librecord module by:

> cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-modules.conf
Section "Module"
            Disable "record"
EndSection

Which is an ugly hack, as Gnome3 is complaining about the missing module and hotkeys do not work in some programs (e.g.: goldendict).

I hope someone could come up with a better solution smile

Re: Random Crashes on Xorg

Today in the morning I noticed that prior the xorg crash I was having some warnings about "resource unavailable" when trying to fork new processes. The fork limits (/etc/security/limits.conf) of my computer were set to 180 processes (hard). I increased it to 1500 (hard). After this modification, I have been using the computer the whole day without xorg crashes !! During this week I'll be able to say if that has solved the problem permanently.

@daroczig try re-enabling the librecord and increase your nproc limits to see if it helps.

Best Regards.

Re: Random Crashes on Xorg

Well, replying my own post. Today I had two crashes already sad So it's not related to the maximum allowed processes. It seems like if it's going to crash, it happens in the first 30 minutes of usage.

Re: Random Crashes on Xorg

I'm having the same issue, HP 420 here

Linux trondheim 2.6.38-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon May 23 22:02:08 CEST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6570 @ 2.10GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
lsmod | grep intel_agp
intel_agp 10480 1 i915
intel_gtt 13943 3 i915,intel_agp

I think this problem is happening in ubuntu too and in fedora also, and it's related to flash, as it happens mostly when loading web pages with flash, at least that's the way I can reproduce the problem, haven't tried @daroczig's hack yet

Re: Random Crashes on Xorg

The fame for the hack goes to @rmanola  smile

Thank you all for the update, I hope we could soon resolve the issue. I am also trying to make some progress.

PS.: I did not have any limitation set for the number of processes in /etc/security/limits.conf.

Re: Random Crashes on Xorg

Might be realted: sometimes (rarly) my computer locks up when I am away with a blank screen with all funs running like a wind turbine (librecord still disabled) when I have to hard reset my computer. Related everything.log:
