I'm desperately trying to transfer some old packages from my pacman cache before I reinstall Arch Linux, I've been trying for two days solid to get my Matrox Graphics card working (see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=120141). However I've now tried 3 different brands of USB drive and my Samsung tablet and I can' get ANY of them to mount just to copy files off. Here's what I get when I try to mount two of the USB sticks:

Perhaps the cause of your difficulty is the proper use of the mount command.
It mounts partitions and requires the partition type..
Thus: mount -t ext2 /dev/sdb1 /mnt...... is an example.
(This places the contents of sdb1 in /mnt)
Then you will be able to transfer the cache data into /mnt.
It is imperative that a partition be stated such as sdb1,2,3 etc.......

What is the output of
mount /dev/sdb1 /some/mountpoint?

I just tried with the Kingston, I get:

What is 'flashdrive'? Is this a valid path to a mountpoint?
If you're in doubt, please read the manpage for 'mount'.

by the way flashdrive is an exisiting directory that I'm trying to mount to. Will try specifying the partition now (that wasn't in the wiki on mounting USB drives!), thanks...

Hi I'm sorry Karol I'm such a noob! I was following the instructions not copying the examples, hence typing mount usb-Kingston_DataTraveler_G3_001CC0EC33FABB40E5DD0076-0:0-part1 path/to/folder!
mount /dev/sdb1 path/to/folder does work fine! And umount path/to/folder successfully unmounts the drive.
I have now copied my first ever file off a Linux machine, and feel very happy about that! I will now try to copy to USB drive all the contents of var/cache/pacman/pkg/, reinstall Arch Linux, then finally pacman -U all these packages from the USB drive to see if I can revert to the old release of xorg and get my Matrox graphics card working again! I've tried pacman -U on the packages on my current installation but I get stuck with all the dependancies.

Have you tried running 'pacman -Udd <list of packages>'?
