After my computer upgrade, i had this problem - my player or usb card-reader cause kernel panic (on pluging and with already plugged while booting on filesystem mount stage after udev).
After upgrade i maked(in fallback mode):
depmod 2.6.39-ARCH
and
mkinitcpio -p kernel26
and normal kernel image now works, but cause that problem
My previous system:
Pentium D + Asus motherboard
now:
Phenom II X4 + ASRock N68C-S
