I have a similar problem to this one (it's unanswered and pretty old, so I decided to start a new topic). I'm using Xfce. Is it even possible to get rid off HAL without getting rid off Thunar's automounting and use udev rules instead? If so, my problem would be solved.
My daemons:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !dbus hal !network @wicd @cups @netfs @crond @bluetooth)
When HAL freezes on startup, I can't even access my USB mouse and keyboard, I have to wait a minute or two, so I can't just background the hal daemon. This is really annoying, I don't even know from where to start solving my problem. Could you help me, please?
Edit: As you'll se below, this issue wasn't connected with HAL.

The wiki says you should add dbus to the daemons, so why have you blacklisted it?

I don't think you need HAL anymore for XFCE. And you really need dbus.

dbus isn't blacklisted, hal starts dbus automatically. But I turned off hal, restarted my laptop and... My mouse and keyboard still freeze for a minute after startup. That's weird. What I was doing recently is installing cups if it helps.

Can you post any logs?

To sum it up:
1. Looks like the problem with mouse is connected with udev, not hal. Here's my dmesg.log. As you can see at the end of the log, my pendrive was recognized (along with my mouse and keyboard) and mounted several seconds after the system startup, even though it was plugged to my computer all the time. Also, during the boot my system started failing at "Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed". I tried "nomodeset solution", but it didn't work. I'm still working on this, meanwhile...
2. ...HAL still freezes.

You don't need HAL anymore. XFCE only needs dbus. KDE, GNOME, XFCE,... now all work without HAL.
To enable automount with Thunar you need the gvfs package. There are a lot of threads on the forum concerning this.

@Varg
Hmm... It seems that you're right, thanks!
@karol
LOL, it works! Big thanks, I hope it isn't going to happen again in a next few days.
BTW, do I have to change the title of my thread? You know, my problem wasn't really connected with HAL.

I just googled that error
[ 22.533447] usb 2-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
you had on the very end of dmesg.log.

Edit your first post. While you're there, add [solved] to the title.
