real media to mp3?

I asked before about wma to wav, I'm back with a new dilemma, which I think will be more difficult.  I want to convert .ram files I find on the net (an internet talk show) and convert them to mp3 for my mp3 player.  I imagine this is difficult, I know of nothing that decodes .ram files.  I doubt many things do considering that it is not an open codec.  But perhaps something can decode the .ram files?

Anybody have any experience with this?

Re: real media to mp3?

mplayer can decode them and dump output to a wav from which you can re-encode to mp3.

im not sure of the specific option, take a look in the man page, it might be -dump or -ao or something.

Re: real media to mp3?

Mplayer can decode them?  Mplayer is unable to play mine... I get this:

"mplayer 050426.ram"
MPlayer 1.0pre7-3.4.3 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel  (Family: 8, Stepping: 7)
Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal!
To get best performance, recompile MPlayer with --disable-runtime-cpudetection.

Failed to open /dev/rtc: No such file or directory (it should be readable by the user.)
Playing 050426.ram.
Win32 LoadLibrary failed to load: avisynth.dll, /usr/lib/win32/avisynth.dll, /usr/local/lib/win32/avisynth.dll

Exiting... (End of file)

I do not have a /dev/rtc but that doesn't seem to be very important.  I looked at the mplayer documentation and it seems to suggest that one installs the realplayer codecs to a totally different codec directory, so I am at a loss as to why I am missing the codec...?

Re: real media to mp3?

To play them, you can try realplayer (or helixplayer).  It's in link's TUR.  To convert them to mp3, I would make the same suggestion as for wma (use audacity to record from the sound card).

it's not a matter of the codec here. if you download the .ram you will see that it contains only meta-data when you view it with a texteditor. most likely it references a rtsp:// stream. you may want to try vlc as it can play and dump those, i think...

Re: real media to mp3?

I don't think vlc plays ram files?  You are right though, it just points to where the ram is, you cannot actually download it, I have to stream it...  wget won't grab them, bummer.

I can play it with only Realplayer?  Seems wierd, makes it really hard to rip ram's all right.

Re: real media to mp3?

Try passing mplayer the actual rtsp stream url

Re: real media to mp3?

Good call, passing the stream plays ram files
