I have been having this problem with all different x64-bit OSes: I can play sound, but I cannot control the volume with the applet on the gnome panel. However, I can control the volume with other mixer apps. The volume buttons on the front of my laptop do not work. When I use a x32-bit OS, the sound system works flawlessly. I am currently using ALSA on a Dell-Inspiron-1520. If I go into sound settings,(gnome3) under hardware, nothing would be listed. Nothing is listed under input or output either.
