Re: monitor refresh rate

$ gtf 1024 768 100

  # 1024x768 @ 100.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 81.40 kHz; pclk: 113.31 MHz
  Modeline "1024x768_100.00" 113.31 1024 1096 1208 1392 768 769 772 814 -HSync +Vsync

Put the resulting Modeline in /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the "Monitor" section. But change 1024x768_100 to 1024x768

You may need to add

Option "IgnoreEdid" "True"

in the "Device" Section

Restart X

Re: monitor refresh rate

If you manage to set the frequency ranges right X will choose the  right frequency (biggest). At least, that's how it worked for me.

Google to find you correct monitor frequency ranges.
Restart X after changing your xorg.conf file.

Re: monitor refresh rate

Because it is automatically set (They're predefined modes, I believe - the videocard automatically detects them (VESA modes) I believe - I'm not really sure though, I'm no expert in video standards).

You might want to try the previous sugestion.

(you could also play with: "xvidtune" (start it within a console, it will also show current freq ranges))

Re: monitor refresh rate

Also make sure that you really have 1024x768 and not something slightly more. Run xrandr for more info.

Re: monitor refresh rate

Those Modelines aren't necessary, DPMS handles setting the refresh rates.

If you set your monitor up right in xorg.conf, DPMS will set the refresh rate properly.

Re: monitor refresh rate

If you set the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh values then those modelines aren't necessary either. But if it works then don't touch it. ;-)

Re: monitor refresh rate

I thought that was the case as other distro´s that I have tried did´nt have them.  As I have learnt, you can always

 cp xorg.conf.cust xorg.conf

as long as you have made a backup
