Hi,
I am new to archlinux but not so new to linux.
I have Installed arch on my lenovo G550 Laptop and its really good.
Just one thing is annoying me, gnome 3 is crashing randomly. Its taking me to login prompt directly.
This happens when I use firefox and access website with flash ( not always ) .
I tried disabling flash plugin and problem disappears. I am using 32 bit version of arch and 2.6.39-ARCH is kernel version.
I found following in Xorg.0.log.old

I have the similar problem with you. When I had watched flash by browser for a time, the system would become very slow.

Strange result, add "apci=off" may be fine.

this problem has been happening for a while now, and I still haven't found a solution I posted in other thread some days ago but no solution so far, today I'm kind of sick of having the problems, I've had like 8 crashes in less than 1 hour, so I came again to the forums and google but no luck so far....

Just to add another voice to the choir, I've had random logouts since updating ~1 week ago. I'm on a HP laptop, ATI graphics. Everything was smooth and now it kicks me back to gdm randomly. Well, semi-randomly in that it only happens if I'm online. And not every time either.
Laptop: Lenovo X1 Carbon, Core i7 2.0Ghz, 8GB RAM, Gnome 3.16
Offline
I don't know if this helps or if someone had tried it, but a friend who uses ubuntu had the same issue with gnome3 and flash, at random times while surfing and loading a flash page, or youtube, or something with flash he got kicked to gdm... he reinstalled xorg and everything is going far so far... I did it too but problem persists, anyone else has tried?

After many days of frustration, I think I got the solution.
I have added following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf as stated in wiki
Section "Device"
Identifier "old intel stuff"
Driver "intel"
Option "Shadow" "True"
EndSection
I haven't added Option "DRI" "false" as gnome 3 goes to fallback mode. I am using the system with flash plugin enabled and no crash in 24 hrs.
I tried to find what this Shadow option does, but failed to find out anything conclusive. Does anybody know about it?

I had many problems with flash 10.3 too.
I went back to 10.1 which I installed from the adobe site and everything is running ok over here.

As soon as i get home i will try this, will post back my result... thanks for the update mithun
EDIT: so far no crashes, and i've been using pages with flash a lot just for testing, seems to solve the problem so far, will post if something goes wrong... thanks for the solution mithun, finally weeks of frustration are gone

One note here, I am experience something weird, that may or may not be related to the change we have done with mithun, lately, since the change, I've been experiencing a freeze of gnome from time to time while using firefox, this doesnt' allow me to launch any app, or continue working with firefox, altough I can continue typing, and I can use commands with guake to kill apps, but the shell doesn't respond at all, it may be firefox, or it may be the change done, but I would like to know if someone is experience the same...
cheers

I haven't experienced any freeze as by mann138. Machine works absolutely fine with option shadow enabled.
Meanwhile I found out the man page documentation for option shadow
Option "Shadow" "boolean"
This option controls the use of GPU acceleration and placement of auxiliary buffers in memory.
Enabling the Shadow will disable all use of the GPU for RENDER acceleration and force software-fallbacks for all but updating the scan-out buffer.
Hardware overlay is still supported so Xv will continue to playback videos using the GPU, but GL will be forced to use software rasterisation as well.
This is a last resort measure for systems with crippling bugs, such as early 8xx chipsets.
It is still hoped that we will find a workaround to enable as much hardware acceleration on those architectures as is possible,
but until then, using a shadow buffer should maintain system stability.
Default: Disabled
Which means it disables most of the GPU acceleration. Damn! my laptop is not some old machine. Why I am getting this issue. I used ubuntu for more than a year and never faced such issue. Whats different with ubuntu intel drivers from my currently installed drivers? Does anyone got any idea?
Offline
I am facing a weird side effect of this. When I tried to take screen shot, I can only see the desktop wallpaper. No running windows nothing. I tried repeatedly with no success.
Then I tried taking screenshot from command line using import command, but this is also giving me desktop and terminal window only.
Offline
I think I have been experiencing the same issue as everyone else here. Occasionally Xorg will crash when closing a flash page. As some of you mentioned, I think it has to do with hardware acceleration of flash. You can disable hardware acceleration of flash without disabling hw accell for everything else. Just open up a youtube video (or any flash video), right-click the video and go to settings. Under the display menu there is an option for enabling/disabling hardware acceleration for flash. Since disabling it I haven't had any more crashes.
Don't know if this is the same problem as everyone else, but hopefully it will help.
EDIT:
I've been using Gnome 3 and the proprietary nVidia driver if it makes any difference.

I'm also a Gnome 3 user (but with compiz) and Nvidia driver.
I have also run into this issue a few times, and i have found a simple way around it. - never close flash while it's playing, hell don't even close a tab that has flash paused... instead, when you are done watching a video (and the video isn't finished) move the time index / slider to the end of the video, once it stops/ends then close it. It's ridiculous (damn adobe flash), but i am using HW acceleration with Flash, my machine hasn't frozen up once, since doing things this way ~ and although slightly annoying, it seems to work for me anyway.
hopefully, adobe will fix their crappy software, as the old 64bit plugin didn't have this issue at all for me. but until then, i am stubburn, and so i am keeping my acceleration

Hello
I had similar Problems.
My problem was, that i manually "installed" libflashplayer.so in ~/.mozilla/plugins as i used to do is with the 11 beta.
Then i installed flash from the community repository via pacman.
Problem solved for me. No more crashes.
Regards

Came across this thread while searching for solution. In my case (gnome3, nvidia twinview), disabling hardware acceleration in flash player worked.

I remember for a period of time i had no crashes at all. Maybe related to this: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … orks&num=1
So I enabled semaphores in i915 by adding i915.semaphores=1 to my grub.cfg, disabled hardware acceleration on flashplugin (again!), don't know why each time I update that setting comes back on, and see what happens...
Be back when i figure out the answer.

Flash no longer crashes over here at all.
It stopped crashing somewhere around the gnome 3.2 update, I also am running nvidia-beta-all from AUR and the latest xorg update. I'm not sure at what point it stopped crashing (mainly because i was good at avoiding crashes), But Flash works 100% with hardware acceleration, flawless
happy times/
