power management for nouveau

Hi,

Just switched back from nvidia-blob to nouveau on my laptop, only to remember that there is only one problem: with this driver my laptop battery can work for about 2 hours, whereas with the nvidia-blob I can squeeze 3,5 to 4,5hours out of it (only used for desktop effects, office use and the occasional online video).

Today I stumbled upon this:
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/PowerManagement

It suggests that nouveau can recognise different powerlevels (at least on some chipsets, including my NV50 8600), but it does not explain how to set those powerlevels. Can anyone shed some light on this? THX!

Re: power management for nouveau

Not sure if same applies to nouveau as the nvidia driver but I suspect so, try this:

And you read our nvidia wiki I assume?

Re: power management for nouveau

lagagnon's link applies only to nvidia blob.
Few weeks ago I was trying nouveau power management with these instructions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1718929 and it was working, but sadly GPU temp was noticeably higher (even on the lowest performance level) than with nvidia blob (dynamic power management). I don't know if it helps with laptop battery time, so you must try it yourself.

Re: power management for nouveau

THX for your answers. It's a pity that it has to be like this. I would very much like to use the nouveau-driver on my laptop, but as I'm having no problems with the nvidia-blob, I guess I'll be returning to it then, at least until nouveau has dynamic power management.
