MythTV Frontend shows blackscreen

I have an SAA7130 card and load the module saa7134 with card=3 option to use my TV card.

I know TVtime works with it, and so does mplayer.

I'm trying to configure MythTV. It is able to scan the channels but mythfrontend does not do anything, I see a black screen for a few seconds and then it goes back to the menu.

Here are the two main errors that I see in mythfrontend:
TV Error: StartRecorder() -- timed out waiting for recorder to start
TV Error: LiveTV not successfully started

and the mythbackend log:
format_to_mode() does not recognize V4L1
LoadFromScheduler(): Error, called from backend.
NVR(/dev/video0): Unknown video codec.  Please go into the TV Settings, Recording Profiles and setup the four 'Software Encoders' profiles.  Assuming RTjpeg for now.

Please help me fix this.

Also this server does not run xserver as such, I use ssh X11 forwarding to run GUI software.
