It's working fine here using a similar setup.
Have double checked all the options in network-manager using nm-connection-editor?

I once had an issue where if I entered my password in the VPN setup page I would not be able to connect.
But if I left the password field blank, and then entered it when attempting to connect (where a pop up occurs) then it would work.

I found the problem. Openvpn don't try to connect when my machine doesn't has the default route. but i wonder how to make it work without default route because my machine and openvpn server are on the same network 10.1.0.0/24. is this network manager's bug? I never had this problem when i use network manager on gnome 2.

I have my machine and my openVPN server on the same network too (192.168.2.0/24), but everything is working OOTB... Although I do have a default route setup.
I will try without default route when I am at home to see if it makes a difference and report back.
