I searched a bit and found a few aging topics in debian/mandriva/ubuntu forums talking about the same issue. Some users report that it works ootb but no real solution is ever mentioned.

Oh, hehe. I thought there was a way to just mount it as a regular mass storage device.
Anyways, libgphoto2 did the trick for me, thank you.

Cameras typically use either Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) or USB Mass Storage (UMS) - yours uses the former.
