I have a virtual Archlinux and i cant log in to the Desktop Environment

KDM treats me as if the password would be wrong (i type in username and password, after pressing enter the text gets marked red and the password is removed) but it works brilliantly on in the loginshell

here is the kdm.log

Re: [SOLVED] Can't log in with KDM

I am personally not using KDM, so I may be of limited help to you. However, I did some googling and it seems a few others have experienced this issue, usually after upgrading KDE. There is a thread with some suggestions that seemed to help other users here

I'd also make sure dbus is running, or even restart the daemon. Just because it's in rc.conf doesn't mean it can't get stopped or crashed after the system booted, especially if you updated something. If you did do a bunch of updates recently, you may even want to just reboot so any of the older libraries and binaries leave your memory, eliminating potential bugs like this.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't log in with KDM

i the link doesnt help my in my problem, i did never login to the Desktop Environment

the log my not be the only problem. i cant imagine why i can't login. its clearly the right password.
Is it possible that KDE uses another keymap than the console??? (but the username is right)

i tried again to start dbus

sudo rc.d start dbus

DONE

but when i start kdm

sudo rc.d start kdm

FAIL

are these the right commands?

what about the first Error in the log (the file /dev/fb0)

has anyone a idea how to solve this?

Re: [SOLVED] Can't log in with KDM

Hi !

You might want to check that DBus is started before kdm. BTW, unless you need to proceed otherwise, start kdm from /etc/inittab and not from /etc/rc.conf's daemons (if it's not what you already do). If you do that, then you can place dbus anywhere in the daemons array, because kdm in inittab will be started after them all. Be sure that you don't have it in both places.

As you thought KDM might use qwerty layout by default (you can change this later using KDE's KDM config dialog).

If you want to change those settings although KDM doesn't work, try running startkde from a VT, changing the keyboard layout to yours and then restarting.

Perhaps you should use ...restart ...for the dbus......

Re: [SOLVED] Can't log in with KDM

@ fififox
i had it in both the inittab and the deamons array, i can remove it in rc.conf
(i used the way the wiki told me)

but is it possible that kde uses anoter keybord layout than virtual console???

does anyone know the framebuffer error in the log??? i have installed framebuffer but i dont know if i am missing something

arch is advanced linux, puhuhu!!! smile

Re: [SOLVED] Can't log in with KDM

It's not KDE that uses different keyboard keyboar layout, but X itself. Check your X configuration.

Error about missing framebuffer device is exactly that: there is no framebuffer device.  Have you installed Xorg properlly (including graphic card driver) ?

However,

AIGLX error: vboxvideo does not export required DRI extension

makes me wonder: are you trying to install Arch with KDE SC inside Virtualbox, or I got it all wrong?

Re: [SOLVED] Can't log in with KDM

as i wrote on the very top, it's a virtual arch inside virtual box.
i do this to learn more about arch before installing in on my desktop and laptop

i am not sure if i have the right graphic drivers, cause i dont know which driver i need for a virtual card
i already installed the guest extension and included the  modules, which the wiki told me, in to the modules array of /etc/rc.conf

is it wrong to trust this config file, also for the dbus issue ???

i just this packages for xorg, right???

xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils
