Hi, Arch newb here, I have been trying to get a display manager working but no matter what i do it just keeps respawning after i log in.
I setup the .xsession and .xinitrc, tried setting it up in inittab, and as a daemon, it seems to be working however after a sucsessful login it just respawns and prompts for login again. im running xfce4, launching startx works fine, ive checked all the wiki's i can find and googled my brains out, tried wdm too and it does exactly the same thing, its driving me crazy any help would be apriceated very much

startx uses .xinitrc, whereas xdm uses .xsession.
Described bahaviour occurs when .xsession script crashes. You might want to check ~/.xsession-errors.
I suggest executing a simple xterm in .xsession and add stuff while it is working.

.xession-errors states the following, as its in my home directory it doesn't see odd that it belongs to dan:users or am i wrong here "probably" if so, who should own it
/bin/sh: /home/dan/.xsession: Permission denied
[root@DevBox dan]# ls -al
total 36
drwx------ 2 dan users 4096 Jun 30 22:55 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Jun 30 22:44 ..
-rw------- 1 dan users 62 Jun 30 22:48 .bash_history
-rw-r--r-- 1 dan users 21 May 7 18:46 .bash_logout
-rw-r--r-- 1 dan users 57 May 7 18:46 .bash_profile
-rw-r--r-- 1 dan users 141 May 7 18:46 .bashrc
-rw------- 1 dan users 0 Jun 30 22:55 .Xauthority
-rw-r--r-- 1 dan users 310 Jun 30 22:48 .xinitrc

Make .xsession executable:
$ chmod 744 .xsession

That did the trick, thank you so much
