I'm using zsh but I have urxvt installed too. For some reason, when I type stuff in the terminal I can see the first portion of whatever it is I'm typing but then it's like the terminal freezes and I can't see the rest unless I run my mouse over the terminal.
Anyone know what the problem is?
I think it has something to do with my graphics drivers or settings, because I also have issues playing flash videos and I have to run my mouse over the video to get it to play again, like I do in the terminal.
I installed the intel drivers for my Thinkpad T61 but I have no xorg.conf, could this be it?
Also, on the arch wiki for my laptop it says something about kernel drivers, where do I get those and could that be an issue if I don't have them?
I'm not sure what's causing it so I don't know what kind of information to give to help my situation, so just ask me if you have an idea.

Please don't bump threads within 24 hours eriksatie.
It does sound like a video (redraw) problem, which DE/WM are you using?

Sorry.
I thought it was a video problem. I am only using scrotwm right now.

If you are going to bump, please provide additional information (like your $TERM, what you have tried to fix it, etc)...

I'm using xterm and zsh and I have tried updating my video card driver and restarting x a bunch of times and that's really it
i don't know what to do because I don't know what's causing the problems
i also have lag in youtube videos but sometimes when i startx i dont have the terminal issues but when i restart x again I have it
very annoying
is there a way to make a fresh install of arch without doing the whole thing over again?

Are you using a compositor? If so, which one (compiz, xcompmgr, cairo-compmgr) ??
Have you tried a different DM -- Openbox, Metacity, etc...

No, I'm not.
I've only used scrotwm so far. But like I said there are times when I startx and I don't have this issue, then I restart x and it returns.
very frustrating not being able to customize what I want

Does it ever happen after a clean boot, on the first start of X? How do you restart X?

Try installing another de/wm and another terminal, and log in and out and restart X a couple of times. If everything works, it would seem like a scrotwm/urxvt/browser issue to me. I don't think lack of xorg.conf can be causing it. In fact, my X only works properly without one.

Now that I think about it, I don't believe it ever happened on a clean boot, but perhaps I'm wrong.
and to restart x i use a hotkey from scrotwm then takes me to the original console.
and perhaps I will try to install another de/wm, thanks for suggestions

I sounds like the problem I had.
It is xf86-video-intel driver issue.
Try using another vte based terminal. I'm using sakura right now, there is also lilyterm, gnome-terminal etc.
BTW - it also affects full screen flash - I zoom webpage so that flash movie fills firefox window.

aww man, that sucks
i have too noticed it affects full screen flash and just flash videos in general

Hey there,
I've been having a similar issue. I too have an Intel video card, but am using StumpWM. A fix I found is to disable KMS and use the Vesa video driver as opposed to Intel. To disable KMS, set 'i915.modeset=0' on your kernel line in grub.cfg/menu.lst (check out http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel for more info). Once you do that, make sure you have Vesa installed (pacman -S xf86-video-vesa) and 'startx'. X should start up using Vesa driver and hopefully fix the issue. Of course the Vesa driver isn't the best if you do heavy graphics processing, but it may suit your needs...possibly fixing the flash issues. Let me know.
The discussion I have about my issue is here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=122438
Hope this helps,
