Kernel Keeps Crashing

I keep getting a kernel dump ( generally when using flash or downloading a file ). It may have something to do with conky since I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be able to schedule while atomic. If I could get hints on whats happening that would be great.

Here is the dump:

I keep getting a kernel dump ( generally when using flash or downloading a file ). It may have something to do with conky since I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be able to schedule while atomic. If I could get hints on whats happening that would be great.

No, this has nothing to do with conky. Conky is a userspace process which is supposed to never crash the system. The "schedule while atomic" is a kernel bug when a module schedules the process even though its currently in atomic context (like holding a spinlock).

It would be really helpful if you could reproduce the bug and tell when exactly this happens. Also try to unload your proprietary drivers. Your kernel is tainted which means you have loaded a driver which is not open-source. (probably your wlan driver or graphics driver).

Hmm... I should be using all open-source drivers. wlan is ath5k and graphics is the xorg-video-ati.

Here is my lsmod output:

After a reboot, loaded wifi drivers and what I normally run I check to see if the kernel is tainted:

cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted
0

I have firefox loaded now. I'll see if I can't figure out what module it is that is tainting it.

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

Okay, it happened again with different results. I opened Firefox, and began watching a flash video (videobb.com) and within 10 mins received a complete freeze. I had to hard reboot which dumped again. I hard rebooted a final time and everything is back to normal. I looked for the dump, but cannot find it.

After I opened firefox/flash I checked if the kernel was tainted and it was not. I left for a bit and came back to the crash. Thus I believe firefox/flash is causing this.

Any new ideas?  or anything more I can provide?

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

It may be related to the hardware acceleration for flash. I encountered the same thing a few months ago and I managed to solve it by turning off the hardware acceleration for flash (right click on a video and then switch it off)

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

I'll try it out. I figure what I'll do is clear my logs. Restart and attempt to crash. Then post the logs here.

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

Okay, the results are here: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/436497/

I did this to cause it:
1: Delete Logs
2: Restart
3: Login
4: Start X (openbox)
5: Start wifi (netcfg)
6: Start firefox (lastest in repo, also happens with chromium)
7: Watch flash (videobb, megavideo, etc)
8: Waits a few mins then CRASH!!

I'm not sure that it is a kernel issue anymore since I don't see any sort of dump. However, if it is not, I figure the software would catch the issues and not crash the os.

Any ideas?

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

Have you tried to switch off the hardware acceleration of the flashplayer ?

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

That seems to have fixed it. It was odd though, some flashplayers don't let you get to the settings however I found hulu allows it.

So would this be a driver issue or a flash issue? I assume it would be a driver issue since I wouldn't think flash should be allowed to crash the system. What driver are you using?

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

Flash has always been pretty buggy on Linux. I've run amd64 for years and I've seen flash take down X more times than I can count. FWIW, it's usually not a full system crash and you can usually ssh in to reboot.

Oh, and X is the exception to the rule that userland programs can't crash the system: X needs privileged access to the hardware so it's free to screw up the kernel.

Re: Kernel Keeps Crashing

@brian_panneton
It probably comes from the driver. I also use xf86-video-ati.
