Kernel 2.6.39 crashes when lowering resolution

My laptop freezes when trying to lower the resolution of my main LCD screen. Multiple screens work OK, and I can change the resolution of external monitors arbitrarily, everything works fine. Downgrading to 2.6.38 makes the problem go away. I'm using an integrated Intel GPU (GMA HD), latest versions of everything from stable.

Has anyone experienced the same problem? Should I file an upstream bug? I guess it's a bit of an uncommon scenario, but I ran into it trying to adjust my screen resolution to match the lower resolution of a projector. For anybody who might be having the same problem, and is running KDE, there's a workaround: settings/configure okular/presentation/placement, you can send the output to the other screen (the "workaround" actually beats my earlier default solution, but a bug's a bug wink)
