Belkin F6D4050 v1 working with wireless N but very slow

I managed to persuade my Belkin wifi dongle to connect using N mode by following the last section on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Se … SB_Dongles

iwconfig reports the connection as running at 135Mb/s which sounds great, however the connection is actually extremely slow. If I run speedtest.net, it reports around 0.4Mb/s (normally it would be around 10).

I also used sshfs to mount the filesystem with my laptop and started to copy a file over the network. The file transferred at about 300KB/s or lower. While the dongle was connected using G mode the file would transfer at around 1MB/s.

I know using a crossover ethernet cable would be more efficient than wireless, but since all my wireless is technically capable of N, I thought I would try it first. This is the only problem left that's stopping things from working great.

Signal strength is around 40%.
